The Commission's regulatory powers are derived from the
Electric Power Act.
On November 25, 2010, the Electric Power
(Electricity-Rate Reduction) Amendment Act was tabled in the
Legislative Assembly by the Honourable Richard F. Brown, Minister of
Environment, Energy and Forestry. This Act reduces
electricity pricing by 14% for customers of Maritime Electric
Company, Limited and freezes these reduced rates until March 1,
2013. During this time, the Commission will have limited
jurisdiction over electricity matters on P.E.I. It is expected that
after March 1, 2013, the Commission will resume regulatory
responsibility, as existed prior to this amendment Act.
